WizardsSpell.com: Online Spelling Practice

Visual and sound cues help children learn to spell

Children and adults learn to spell using WizardsSpell.com. It's concept was born out of a need within Second Street Web. It is our baby, built for one of our children, and now helping children around the world to learn to spell.

Our daughter was unable to differentiate between phonemes. For her, the sounds -nk, -ng, or -nq sounded the same. Thus it was difficult for her to learn to spell using standard phonetic methods. We tried many software packages, one in particular was over $1000 dollars. While there were some mild gains, my daughter would complain that none of them helped her to do better in school. She was never exactly practicing what she was being tested on in school.

Knowing that her visual accuity was high, the first prototype of WizardsSpell just faded the words for her. These were her assigned words - the relevant ones - the one she would be tested on. Her grades went from Fs to As in just days. The change in her confidence was amazing.

We furthered the Wizardsspell concept by working with LD Teachers (teachers of the learning disabled). It now incorporates sound and a suite of features for teachers, enabling them to individualize spelling assignments and monitor student test and practice activity.
